Nong Youhui was born with bright blue eyes that no one in his village had ever seen before.
His father began to worry when the baby was only a few months old. Doctors told him it was temporary and that his eyes would darken over the years. That didn’t happen: over time, they shone even brighter, and people in southern China started talking about the !cat boy”.

What sparked curiosity came later. His teacher said the boy was able to catch crickets at night without needing a flashlight. And in a report on Chinese television, a journalist left him alone in his dark room with a sheet of questions: according to the account, the paper was returned with the answers filled in correctly.

The story made headlines around the world, but science urged caution. Doctors spoke of a pigmentation condition that makes the eyes very sensitive to light, not of superior night vision. No specialist confirmed this ability, and nothing is known for certain about his life after the fame.

A real gift or a viral legend? What is certain is that his eyes drew attention because of their color, even though he didn’t have night vision.
