Kerry-Lee Gockel was born without arms, but from a young age, her parents refused to let her disability determine how far she could go. She learned to get around using her feet, even to drive, and over the years, she found one of her great passions in the water.

Today, she is known as “The Wingless Warrior” and has become a prominent open-water swimmer. She has completed several 10-kilometer events and, in August 2025, swam 20,4 kilometers around Great Keppel Island, a distance recognized by Guinness World Records as a world record in her category.

To do this, she mainly uses her legs and torso, as well as fins, while a support swimmer accompanies her for safety. But for Kerry-Lee, every challenge is also a way to show that a disability doesn’t have to define a person’s limits.

“I want children to see that being different and facing challenges doesn’t mean they can’t do incredible things…”, she explained during one of her first major swims.

Her story began with a girl who learned not to hide from people’s stares. Today, that same woman swims for hours in open water to show that often, limits are where we ourselves decide to place them.
