In this family, everyone had something to show. During a presentation at the San Diego Zoo, a mama otter happily came over with her pup, while visitors melted watching the baby. Everything was very sweet, very much like a lovely nature documentary scene… until papa otter appeared.
And he was proud too, obviously. Except instead of bringing another baby, he showed up carrying a rock as if it were his big family contribution of the day. He held it so carefully that it was impossible not to think that, to him, that stone was just as important.
The scene went viral for exactly that reason: mama showing off her pup like any proud mother, and papa showing up with his favorite rock, perhaps expecting the same level of admiration. And well… he kind of earned it.
Although it is funny, the stone was not just anything. Otters use rocks as tools to open shells and hard foods, and they can even keep their favorites for a long time. In other words, to us it was a rock; to him, it was probably his star utensil.
So yes: mama had the baby, papa had his rock… and both were having their moment. Each one proud of their own, as it should be.
