Brazilian doctor Leandro Brandão Guimarães knows that a hospital can be scary, but for his patients, the hallway to the operating room is actually a rescue mission. As a pediatric otolaryngologist, he decided that the best medicine against fear was imagination: he dresses children as superheroes and takes them “flying” to their surgery.
This humanization project born in Brazil not only calms the little ones, but also eases the hearts of their families. Thanks to his creativity and empathy, Leandro received in Italy the WEmbrace Awards 2025 prize in the inspiring stories category.
His initiative now motivates doctors around the world to understand that a cape and a game can be important for healing. It is a reminder that medicine, when practiced with love, really saves the day.
