Brian Diehl says nothing. He simply sits down, takes out his phone, and takes a picture.
In 2023, that tradition was different: he and his daughter Chelsea smiled together beside a lake, she with her blonde braid and the laugh that, according to everyone who knew her in Lacey Township, New Jersey, lit up any room. A year later, on March 3, 2024, Chelsea died at just 14 years old. She was an honor student, a competitive cheerleader, and loved soccer and ice skating.
Since then, Brian returns each year to the same place and repeats the same gesture: a selfie, without long phrases or speeches. The first time was in a frozen cemetery, with a pink chair and flowers behind him. Then came the stuffed animals and small signs. By 2026, standing before a black granite headstone with her name and smile engraved on it, Brian looks like a different man. The same father, but carrying the weight of every year.
