In the Netherlands, there is a café that decided to do things differently.
It’s called ‘Brownies & Downies’ and there, amid the smell of freshly brewed coffee and trays of brownies, a team made up almost entirely of young people with Down syndrome, autism, and other intellectual disabilities works. They weren’t hired out of pity or as a symbolic gesture: they were trained, paid a fair wage, and given a real place to serve, smile, and make mistakes like any other employee.
What started as a small establishment now has branches in different cities across the Netherlands and has reached South Africa. Customers don’t just go for the coffee: they go because each server reminds them that working with dignity should not be an exception.
