Nine years mean many early mornings, many operations, and the same pair of eyes meeting before getting out of the patrol car.
Bruma joined Durango’s K-9 Squad in 2017. Since then, she stood guard, protected, detected narcotics, and, without meaning to, won the affection of an entire police force. Her handler met her when she was young and watched her grow old while working by her side. On the day of her retirement, when the time came to remove her harness for the last time, she could not hold back her tears: she rested her head on the dog’s chest and stayed there, as if that gesture could make time stand still a little longer.
Bruma leaves something behind: she is the mother of three dogs that continue patrolling the streets of Durango today. Mayor Antonio Ochoa publicly thanked her for her service. But the true tribute was already there in that embrace, in the woman who found in a dog the exact definition of loyalty.
