Bruno Aloi has been a bullfighter for less than a year.
On Saturday, he went in for the kill with his third bull of the afternoon, a 484-kilogram specimen named “Bendecido”, at the Plaza Monumental de Zacatecas. The animal caught him with its horn and opened a wound measuring between 30 and 35 centimeters that began in the right armpit and continued up to the neck and thorax. Dr. Raúl Cabral Soto, head of the plaza’s medical services, documented the exact path of the goring in the official report.
He underwent surgery for more than three hours at Centro Hospitalario San José: cleaning of the wound, vascular examination, repair of the humeral vein, and drainage. The doctors described the prognosis as good for survival, but guarded because of the risk of infection. Three days later, on Tuesday, Bruno was discharged. The son of rejoneador Giovanni Aloi, he had been wearing the suit of lights for only a few months when the tradition he had chosen came close to costing him everything.
