When Hailey Bieber said she had Brazilian roots, no one believed her, and she knows why 😬.
The model explained that one of her biggest insecurities when talking about that side of her family is not being fluent in Portuguese. Her mother, Kennya Baldwin, was born in Brazil, so Hailey grew up connected to that part of her heritage.
Even so, she acknowledges that sometimes she feels she has no “right” to boast too much about her roots because she fears people will question her precisely because of the language.
“I often wonder whether it would be a little silly to boast about my Brazilian heritage and have people say something like: ‘Okay, but she doesn’t even know how to speak Portuguese’”, she confessed.
Hailey understands some of the language and has said she would like to speak it better, but she knows that for many people, it remains a kind of test of authenticity.
And perhaps that’s why she finds it so difficult to talk about the subject: not because she doubts her roots, but because she fears others will do it for her.
