Cait Robertson is 39, has two children and works with a material nobody would expect to find in a jewelry store.

The designer sprinkles tiny fragments of tooth into resin and turns them into stones that look like opals and gemstones. Before teeth, she had already worked with ashes, dried breast milk, sand, fabric with personal meaning, umbilical cords and even a kidney stone. She made a keepsake for Amanda Holden using a child’s tooth.

She tells Need To Know that most people wouldn’t guess there’s a tooth inside unless they’re told. And she goes further: to her, these pieces are more beautiful and meaningful than diamonds. A custom ring can cost thousands, though personalized orders start at 130 dollars.
