Canelo arrived alone.
No one knows how long he wandered the streets of Celaya, Guanajuato, before his paws led him to the door of Cecyteg in Rincón de Tamayo. He was looking for food, nothing more. But the students and teachers at the school saw something different in that skinny brown Chihuahua: they decided to keep him.
That was almost two years ago. Since then, Canelo has had a bowl, a roof, and 250 older siblings who look after him as if he were part of the student body. One student even opened a Facebook account to share his story, and when he disappeared for a couple of days, the entire school went out to look for him until they brought him back.
When graduation day arrived, principal José Ricardo Elguera did not hesitate: teachers and staff pooled their money to make him a cap and gown in his size. Canelo marched among the graduates like one of them and stayed where he had always wanted to stay: at home, since the school is now his permanent home and workplace.
