Two earthquakes in a row. That was enough for structures to give way in Caracas and for dozens of people to take to the streets not knowing what else to do, except kneel.

While rescue teams worked through the rubble searching for those who were trapped, their neighbors formed prayer circles right in the middle of the street. Some were crying. Others squeezed their eyes shut and moved their lips in silence. It did not matter whether they knew each other: the same desperation brought them together in a circle, shoulder to shoulder, praying that there would be life on the other side of the fallen concrete.

Images of the collective outcry in the streets of the Venezuelan capital quickly spread on social media, and what hits hardest is not the disaster itself, but that raw and irresistible faith of those who can no longer do anything but pray and wait.
