Carlos Enrique de Saro Puebla knew one thing very clearly from childhood: Down syndrome would not define him.
In Cuernavaca, Morelos, every door he knocked on while looking for work was closed in his face with the same phrase disguised as doubt: “how will he be able to do it?”. A department store finally gave him a chance. Then came computers, caring for his father, who was ill with cancer, and, after losing him, a turn no one expected: he stepped onto a stage for the first time without knowing how that conference would end.
Today, at 41, Carlos is the author of 5 books, a lecturer, and a teacher of a group of children with Down syndrome. He received an Honorary Doctorate—the first awarded to a writer with this condition—and continues repeating the same idea that has sustained him since he was young: the limitation was never in the extra chromosome, but in what each person chooses to believe about themselves.
