Carlos Fresco learned that his dog Monty would soon die of cancer and wheeled him in a wheelbarrow to the summit of his favorite mountain

Monty was 10 years old, had cancer, and could no longer walk. But he still had one mountain left to climb.

Carlos Fresco refused to accept that his labradoodle would say goodbye to the world from a sofa. He found an old wheelbarrow in a friend’s garden in Brecon, Wales, and pushed Monty uphill to the summit of Pen y Fan, the peak they had climbed together so many times when Monty’s legs still worked.

Along the way, unfamiliar hikers joined in pushing without asking too many questions: one look at the dog was enough to understand the scene. Monty died at home 21 days later, on June 21, 2021, but before that he had his final view from the top.
