Scarlett knew nothing about heroes, but that night she did something that seemed impossible. In a fire in Brooklyn, firefighters saw a stray cat enter the burning garage again and again, not to hide or escape, but to bring out her five kittens.

Each time she went back in, she came out worse. She had burns, injured ears, and eyes so damaged by the fire that she ended up unable to see well. But even so, she kept going back in, as if nothing mattered more than getting her babies out of there.

When she managed to rescue the last kitten, she still did one more thing that ended up breaking everyone’s heart: she touched them with her nose, one by one, as if she needed to make sure they were alive and that none had been left behind.

Only then could her body take no more, and Scarlett collapsed. A firefighter took her to the vet, where a very long recovery began, with months of care for the burns and the damage she had suffered.

The story became known all over the world. Scarlett survived, her kittens did too, and later she was adopted by a woman who wanted to give a home to an animal with special needs.

She lived 12 more years, but that night she was forever remembered as the cat who crossed through fire five times for her children. Because there are instincts that need no explanation, only love.
