Charles Kelley knows all too well what it means to be at the top. He is the lead singer of Lady A, the American country band behind hits like “Need You Now” and “American Honey”, but while his career moved forward in the public eye, offstage his relationship with alcohol was destroying his life and the lives of those he loved most.
The breaking point came during a family vacation in Greece in 2022. After arguing with his wife Cassie, Charles turned off his phone, disappeared overnight, and ended up drinking with strangers while his wife and eight friends tried to find him.
Charles Kelley decided to enter a treatment center, and after months, the results began to show.
My best filter is simply… not drinking.
But he didn’t see the full journey until he shared the photos.
He said that Cassie once asked him whether he ever looked at old photos of himself and thought: “Who is that guy?”. He said yes and chose one of them specifically to show how far he had come.
In one, he appears with a vacant stare, his face swollen, in a selfie that even he doesn’t recognize. In the other, he’s in the water, smiling and embracing his wife Cassie.
“She is the reason I stopped drinking”, the singer would acknowledge years later about his wife. Charles says she showed enormous patience during his recovery, although both have made it clear that saving their marriage also required work from both of them.
Quitting alcohol also forced the singer to change the way he approached his own career. When Lady A returned to the stage, the group established rules to keep the tour bus, hotels, and other spaces related to their travels alcohol-free, creating an environment that allowed Kelley to continue working without returning to the habits he had left behind.
But for him, the real before and after isn’t in his face.
“I could keep talking about the many blessings that have come since I quit drinking, far beyond looking healthy”, he explained, noting that the photograph simply reminds him of a place he doesn’t want to return to.
