Charlize Theron wasn’t discovered at an audition: an agent saw her pleading for help at a bank, when she had only 300 dollars.

Everyone knows Charlize Theron from the red carpets. Few know that her first big moment happened at a bank teller window.

She was born and raised near Johannesburg. At 16, she went with her mother to Milan to start out as a model. A year later, they moved to the United States, where she trained as a ballet dancer. It was her dream.

A knee injury ended it.

In 1994, she landed in Los Angeles with a few hundred dollars her mother had given her. It was enough to get by until she found work. There was no plan B, no famous surname, no one waiting for her.

Then she went into a bank. She tried to cash a check, and they told her they couldn’t because it was from another state. To her, that check meant a roof over her head and food. She tried to convince the employee. She insisted. She argued.

And in the middle of that argument, an agent saw her and discovered her.

No one expects their fate to change in a bank line. But Charlize didn’t give up when ballet was no longer an option, or when the teller window was closed to her. That stubbornness is what has made her one of Hollywood’s biggest stars today.

Sometimes the door that opens is the same one someone just slammed in your face.
