Charlotte was four years old when she received her first cochlear implant.
Her father, Alistair Campbell, wanted to make sure the change wouldn’t make her feel different. Three days after the operation, in New Zealand, he shaved his head and got a tattoo of the device she wore. According to the HuffPost España article, published on August 6, 2015, he did it out of love and so Charlotte wouldn’t feel different.
With profound deafness in her left ear, Charlotte laughed, touched the tattoo, and said it was “cool”. Anita Campbell, her mother, also appears in the account. Alistair couldn’t experience it for her, but he found a way to accompany her: carrying a visible sign on his head that she wasn’t alone.
