Huang caused outrage by selling her two children.
The 26-year-old woman, nicknamed “The Monster”, went looking for men with the sole intention of becoming pregnant with a second baby so she could sell it.
Huang, originally from Guangxi province, only attended primary school. She was adopted as a child and grew up without care or education until she left home as barely a teenager.
When she found herself in financial trouble, the woman decided to sell her baby in 2020. Her landlord, a man surnamed Wei, put her in touch with a relative named Li, whose son could not have children of his own. They paid her 45.000 yuan, about 6.300 dollars.
With that money, Huang bought neither food nor shelter. She spent all the money tipping her favorite streamers, buying clothes and other extravagant items with the proceeds.
When poverty overwhelmed her, she decided to do it again. For Guyu, born in 2022, she received 5.300 dollars, although the middleman later resold him for 14.000.
But she did not get away with it for long. On April 13, 2022, the woman was reported to the authorities for suspected fraud, and a police investigation uncovered records of conversations related to the sale of children on her mobile phone.
The children were rescued by police in April 2022 and placed under the guardianship of local civil affairs departments, pending adoption.
On July 8, the Jin’an District People’s Court of Fuzhou sentenced Huang to five years and two months in prison for fraud and illegal trafficking, in addition to a fine of 30.000 yuan (4.000 U.S. dollars).
A Fuzhou court sentenced Huang to five years and two months in prison. For many on social media, the sentence falls short of the damage: “She is unforgivable”, “She is a monster and unfit to be a mother”, some say; “she has paid her debt, and we should let her rebuild her life”, others reply.
Many defend the woman because of her lack of education, but although an education is not necessary for common sense and maternal instinct, it is clear that not everyone possesses them.
