Maria Avila worked as a housekeeper at Chris Brown’s home in Tarzana, California. In December 2020, she went out to take out the trash and Hades, a 90-kilo Caucasian Shepherd owned by the singer, lunged at her. It tore her face and left arm. She needed skin grafts from her own abdomen and was never able to work in that again.

At the trial, Brown admitted something that surprised everyone: he fled the scene and drove around for hours for fear of a “media circus”, without personally calling 911. He said he had warned Maria and her sister not to go out alone, but they denied it.

The jury in Van Nuys ordered Brown and his company to pay $12.9 million to Maria, plus 885,000 to her sister and 50,000 to her husband. The verdict came four days after Brown kicked off his tour with Usher. 🐾⚖️
