Christian Zedig went to watch the match between Norway and Ivory Coast at a World Cup fan zone in Copenhagen. He was 32, off duty, and the father of two young daughters.

On June 30, a fight broke out in front of the giant screen, and Zedig intervened. Amid the chaos, he was struck in the throat, rupturing an artery. By the time the police arrived, he had already sustained life-threatening injuries. He died three days later in a city hospital.

On July 3, the same morning he died, 31-year-old Nkumba Ludovic Tshiembe, who had a background in boxing, turned himself in to the authorities. At first, he denied doing anything wrong. At his trial on October 7, he admitted his guilt and, when asked about the blow, replied: “I don’t know why I hit him”. He was sentenced to one year in prison, plus compensation of 1.9 million Danish kroner, about $215,000 at the approximate exchange rate, for Zedig’s wife and two daughters. A whole life against one year.
