Cinépolis launched a controversial Supergirl cup and internet users compared it to a part of the male anatomy

Someone in Cinépolis’ design department had a very difficult week. The Mexican chain launched a 3D collectible cup to promote the new Supergirl movie and, within minutes, the internet had already reached a unanimous conclusion: that does not look like a superheroine.

The problem lies in the combination of materials and colors. The cup has a blue suit base, but on top it features a flesh-toned sculpted trench coat — inspired by the film’s official posters — with wrinkled fabric and a foldable hood. The plastic result led hundreds of users to compare it to an adult toy or to a part of the male anatomy. The memes came on their own. 🫣

The curious thing is that Cinépolis neither pulled it nor changed the design. The cup goes on presale on June 24, just before the premiere, and will be sold alongside other DC Universe items such as a Lobo motorcycle-shaped popcorn bucket and Krypto the Superdog plushies. Some people will probably buy it precisely because of the scandal — because sometimes controversy is the best marketing campaign.
