Camilo wrote on the invitation to his daughter Índigo’s birthday party: “If you love her, don’t bring her gifts”. The gifts arrived anyway.

The 32-year-old Colombian singer shared this on Alex Fidalgo’s podcast ‘Lo Que Tú Dices’. He said he doesn’t know “how you dole out 700 gifts”, so he and Evaluna Montaner put them away quickly, before the girl sees them, and give them to her one per month.

And he went further: “I have to pretend there’s scarcity, and I’m not very good at it, but I try”. What scares him, he explained, is that his daughters won’t experience what shaped him as a child.

For some, it’s conscious parenting: teaching that you don’t need everything you want. For others, it’s a difficult act to keep up when the girls’ real lives are far removed from any deprivation.

Can you teach people to appreciate what they have without having experienced lack, or can scarcity only be understood when it’s real?
