Louis Jordan was 19 years old when he saw a woman standing under the Houston sun, waiting for a bus that never came.
It was May 2018. The heat in Texas was already intense, and Louis only had to pass by there to pick up his mother from work. He could have kept going. He didn’t.
He took out an umbrella he kept in the car and stayed beside her. The woman was named Michelle, and she was waiting for a special transportation service, METRO Lift. The wait stretched to almost two hours. Louis didn’t move.
Bernette Botts, Louis’s mother, arrived and found the scene: her son holding the shade over a stranger as if it were the most normal thing in the world. She took a photo. That photo spread across the entire United States.
But what people didn’t know at first was that this wasn’t the first time Louis had done something like this. During the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, he had rescued his own grandmother.
Since that day at the bus stop, Louis and Michelle have been friends. Every time he sees her waiting for the bus under the sun, he shows up with the same umbrella.
Some people save someone once and tell the story for the rest of their lives. Louis simply went back to get his umbrella.
