In the Damaraland Desert of Namibia, an elephant mother walked for days under relentless heat, carrying the body of her calf, which had been stillborn, in her trunk. She touched it gently and sniffed it again and again, as if searching for a sign that it was still breathing. There was no such sign, but neither was there a farewell.
The researchers who documented the scene explain that elephants have complex mourning rituals: they surround their dead, touch them with their trunks, and sometimes remain beside the body for days before accepting the loss. This mother found no solace in the herd or in the arid landscape surrounding her, only in not abandoning her calf until the end.
She carries death with the same trunk with which she once caressed life.
