Before you start doing the math and get confused: yes, her husband had died 14 months earlier, and a pregnancy lasts around nine months. But there is an explanation.
Sarah Shellenberger and her husband, Scott, dreamed of becoming parents and had turned to in vitro fertilization. During the treatment, they managed to create embryos that were frozen, but before they could fulfill that dream together, he suddenly died of a heart attack in February 2020.
Sarah decided to continue with the plan they had built as a couple and used one of those embryos. The first attempt was unsuccessful, but she tried again and then received the news she had been waiting for so long: she was pregnant.
“I couldn’t believe it”, she recalled, thinking back to that moment. Finally, in May 2021, at the age of 40, she gave birth to Hayes, 14 months after losing Scott.
Her husband did not live to meet their little one, but the son they had both dreamed of was able to come into the world thanks to one of the embryos they had left frozen before his death.
