Legal inclusion and independent family development marked a historic step forward thanks to the perseverance of two citizens from Lleida in Spain.

Two people named Esther, 38, and Tonet, 40, officially became the first couple with Down syndrome to marry in the country after celebrating their wedding on May 27, 2023.

Despite their parents’ fears, the bride and groom went ahead with their union, for which they had to successfully complete a 3-year training program aimed at strengthening their civil union, taught by the Down syndrome Association of Lleida, demonstrating that they had the necessary skills to live independently.
