The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Alex Murdaugh’s convictions for the murders of his wife Maggie and his son Paul, which occurred in 2021 in the United States, and ordered a new trial.

The decision was made on May 13, 2026 after the judges concluded that there had been “improper interference” with the jury during the 2023 trial, allegedly caused by court official Rebecca Hill.

Even so, Murdaugh will remain in prison because he is still serving sentences for multiple financial crimes and fraud. The case today is one of the most high-profile in the country because it involves a powerful family linked to the judicial system.
