It was 2007, and the actor, then starring in the play Equus in London’s West End, was fed up with the paparazzi waiting for him every night outside the Gielgud Theatre (spoiler: he got naked onstage in the play, so the interest was high). His solution was absurdly simple: the same jacket, the same cap, and a T-shirt underneath that barely varied, day after day. As he himself said years later on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he kept up the trick for 6 months.
The result was as effective as it was funny: no editor could publish the photos because they all looked as if they had been taken on the same day, and to the tabloids, an old photo is worthless. As if that weren’t enough, a friend gave him a jacket with a reflective surface so the camera flashes would directly ruin the image. Kelly Clarkson, laughing, said she was thinking of stealing the idea.
