Danny Trejo spent eleven years going in and out of California’s toughest prisons. Armed robberies, drug dealing, cells in San Quentin. He started using when he was just a child, led by an uncle.

In 1968, during a prison riot, he was sent to solitary confinement. To the hole. There, locked up and not knowing whether he would get out alive, he made a promise: if he was given another chance, he would dedicate the rest of his life to helping others.

He got out of prison in 1969. He did not get out to pursue movies. He got out to keep his word.

He began attending sobriety meetings. Then he became a counselor for people with addictions. Whole years listening, supporting, holding others up at their worst moments. No cameras, no script, no one watching.

Sixteen years sober. That was Danny Trejo in 1985, not looking for a role, but accompanying someone he was helping stay clean on the set of a film called Runaway Train. Someone noticed his history as a prison boxer. He ended up training an actor. And without seeking it, he ended up acting. That day, a star was not born. A consequence was born. The real transformation had happened much earlier, in silence, without witnesses, when he decided what kind of man he wanted to be with the time he had left. Trejo reached 55 years of sobriety. He still says that everything good that happened to him was the result of helping someone else. What you did does not have to be who you are forever.
