It was before dawn on November 29, 2000, and David Spade, known for films such as ‘Tommy Boy’ and ‘Grown Ups’, was sleeping in his Beverly Hills home. When he opened his eyes, someone was standing over him.
That someone was David Warren Malloy, his personal assistant of five years, an actor looking for his big break whom Spade considered practically a friend. Malloy punched him and then attacked him with a stun gun of at least 100,000 volts. Spade ran outside, but couldn’t even get past the security gates of his own home. He had to go back inside, lock Malloy outside the house, and call 911.
The strangest part came later: with minor injuries and refusing medical attention, Spade showed up that same day on the set of ‘Just Shoot Me’, where he ironically played a celebrity’s assistant. Months later, Malloy’s defense argued that he was in a psychotic state due to cocaine use. He pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and received five years of probation, 480 hours of community service, and a restraining order.
