Debbie Solsman spent 14 years serving lunches at Denver Place Elementary School in Wilmington, Ohio. She knew every child, knew who came back for seconds and who barely took a bite. When a student did not have enough balance in their account, the rule was to give them only a cheese sandwich. She began giving them a little more.
According to her, she heard the same phrase too many times: they were still hungry after lunch. In February, she was fired. The Wilmington school district says that no student goes without a full meal, regardless of their account balance, but it did not explain why she was dismissed.
The story became public, and she received two offers to work again in school cafeterias. No one from the district wanted to provide further details, citing employment privacy.
