She thought she was simply helping a man who needed a hand, never imagining that someone was watching this small gesture. Evoni Williams was 18 years old and worked as a waitress at a Texas restaurant while saving money in the hope of being able to attend college.
During one of her shifts, she served Adrien Charpentier, a 78-year-old man who had difficulty using his hands and relied on an oxygen tank. When he explained that he couldn’t cut his food properly, Evoni didn’t hesitate: she took the utensils and began cutting it into small pieces so he could eat.
For her, it was only a few minutes of her shift. However, another customer saw the scene, took a photograph, and shared it on social media, where thousands of people were ultimately moved by the natural way the young woman stopped to help him.
The story reached much farther than Evoni could have imagined. A university decided to award her a 16-thousand-dollar scholarship to help her fulfill her dream of studying, and the city of La Marque even proclaimed a day in her honor.
