His partner publicly reported it: insurer Sura refused to treat him because, as they explained, the program for pregnant people is exclusive to women.

The case had already been reported to Colombia’s Health Superintendency, but the couple says nothing changed. Sura responded with a public apology, although so far it has not confirmed any adjustments to its care protocol.

The couple points out something few people know: Colombia’s Constitution refers to a “pregnant person”, not only women, which includes trans men and nonbinary people who can become pregnant. Meanwhile, Santiago and his baby are still waiting for the healthcare system to catch up with science and the law.
