An ice cream, cream, and fruit dessert that looks huge from the front and reveals its real trick from the side.

Denny’s Japan launched “The 1/2 Parfait” in January 2026, a version of its popular dessert served in a glass literally reduced by half. From the front, it looks like a complete, photogenic dessert, but when turned around, it becomes clear that it contains approximately half the usual portion.

To create the unusual container, the chain worked with Japanese glass artisan Masao Nakamura after nearly a year of testing.

The idea came about after a Denny’s survey revealed that 54% of respondents had at some point ordered food or desserts because of how good they would look in photos, while approximately 1 in 3 admitted to leaving a dessert unfinished.

The concept, developed together with agency I&S BBDO, aimed to reduce waste without eliminating the appeal of sharing food on social media. And the response exceeded expectations: during its first two weeks, it reached 380% of its projected sales target.
