When night falls in Lima, Silvia Conde Atunca goes out onto the street with a bag of sweets.
She isn’t selling for herself. She sells for 35 dogs and 13 cats that she rescued and that now depend on her hands.
Hands with deformities, just like her feet. Neither has stopped her.
As she herself says on social media, every sweet sold is one guaranteed meal for one of her 38 rescued animals. Nothing more, nothing less.
Her story, told on her own Facebook profile, has already brought together more than 54 thousand people who follow her work and sometimes come over to help her.
She isn’t asking for handouts. She’s asking people to buy a sweet.
Every coin she receives becomes food. Every animal that eats that night is, in some way, a small victory of hers.
Some feats are fought out in stadiums. Others are won night after night, on a street corner, with a bag of sweets and 38 reasons not to give up.
