For a moment, she stopped seeming like a fairytale princess and simply looked like a completely exhausted 20-year-old.
The photo was taken on November 4, 1981, during a gala at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Diana attended with Prince Charles and, in the middle of the event, ended up falling asleep in her seat for a few minutes.
Photographer Tim Graham captured that exact moment, and the image soon appeared in the British press. Because of the scene, some media outlets began calling her “Sleeping Beauty”.
What was not yet publicly known was that Diana was pregnant with her first child. The next day, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the princess was expecting a baby who would become Prince William a few months later.
Her exhaustion also came after an intense schedule: she had just completed a royal tour of Wales and had attended the opening of Parliament that same day. She had been married for only a few months and was still adjusting to a life filled with official engagements, cameras, and constant attention.
The image came to be remembered because, behind the dress, the crown, and all the ceremony, it showed something much simpler: a pregnant young woman who simply could not stay awake any longer.
