Joaquim and Isabel Silva traveled to Houston as guests of honor of the Portuguese Football Federation. They went to watch Portugal in its 2026 World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17. But when the anthem began and Diogo Jota’s image appeared on the giant stadium screens, they could not hold back any longer. Both wept in the stands as thousands of people in the stadium remembered the forward who died in a traffic accident on July 3, 2025, along with his brother André.
Portugal did not let Jota go to the World Cup alone. Head coach Roberto Martínez included him as an honorary member of the team and declared before the tournament: “Diogo is our light”. The entire squad took the field wearing bracelets engraved with his name, an initiative promoted by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro himself. Even Rute Cardoso, Jota’s widow and the mother of his three children, wrote a letter to Scotland captain Andy Robertson, Diogo’s former teammate at Liverpool, asking him to carry the World Cup dream that he could not fulfill.
His parents saw it all from the stands. And in that Houston stadium, for a moment, Diogo Jota was there.
