Andri Gudjohnsen was barely four years old when his father Eidur arrived at Barcelona and became teammates with a certain Lionel Messi. Twenty years later, that child who ran around Barca’s facilities grew up, became a professional footballer, and on June 9, 2026 took the field to face the Argentina National Team in Alabama. 🤯

At the end of the match —3-0 for Argentina, with a penalty goal from Messi— the Icelandic Blackburn Rovers forward approached the albiceleste captain and asked the question no one expected: “Do you remember who I am?” Messi, as he later admitted in the mixed zone, was left puzzled. “He was very little”, he admitted. He vaguely remembered him from training sessions, but seeing him turned into a professional rival was a reality check that was hard to process. 🫶

The two exchanged shirts and the video of the moment instantly went viral. Eidur Gudjohnsen played for Barca between 2006 and 2009, the same years in which Messi established himself as a global star. His son was born in 2002, developed at Espanyol and Real Madrid Castilla, and now plays in England’s second division. Messi’s sixth World Cup begins on June 16. Time, in this sport, spares no one… except him. ⚽
