Michael Zollicoffer is 66 years old, and in Baltimore everyone calls him “Dr. Z”. For nearly 40 years, he treated anyone who walked through his door, whether they had money or not, and gave out his personal number so they could call him at any hour.
In October 2024, he was diagnosed with two cancers, one kidney and the other colorectal.
A problem with a Medicare payment took away his coverage just when treatment was beginning, valued at about 150,000 dollars.
More than 3,400 people donated to help him and raised more than 280,000 dollars. The United States Congress recognized him in writing, and today the tumor has shrunk by half. He continues seeing patients every week.
