In Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, a 55-year-old man arrived at the hospital after suffering a stroke. No one imagined what the doctors would find while treating him.
Upon noticing that he was having difficulty urinating, the medical team discovered a bladder stone that turned out to weigh 3,1 kilos and measure 17,9 centimeters: the size of an ostrich egg and the weight of a newborn baby. According to Dr. Pragalathan Balakrishnan, who led the operation, it is the largest bladder stone ever documented and surgically removed, surpassing the previous record of 1,9 kg recorded in Brazil in 2003.
The most unsettling part is the time: the doctors estimate that the stone formed slowly in his body over 5 to 10 years, while he went on with his life. Today, the patient is in good health and remains hospitalized for his other medical conditions.
