A 55-year-old man arrived at a hospital in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, after suffering a stroke. No one imagined that his admission would uncover something much stranger.
While treating him, doctors noticed that he had difficulty urinating. Upon examination, they found a stone lodged in his bladder: it weighed 3.1 kilos and measured 17 centimeters, nearly the size of an ostrich egg and the weight of a newborn baby. Dr. Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgery, estimates that the stone formed silently inside his body over 5 to 10 years.
The case surpassed the previous record, set in Brazil in 2003, when a 1.9-kilo stone was removed. The patient remains hospitalized, stable and under observation, while the finding becomes the largest bladder stone documented to date.
