Cortez was alone in the parking lot, trembling among the cars.
Teacher Donna Rivera saw her first and took a photo of her to show principal Lynn Soriano at Manuel J. Cortez Elementary School in Las Vegas. The plan was simple: take care of her only for the weekend. But that dog’s sweetness dismantled any plan.
Today, Cortez goes to school every day. She has her own badge, appears in the yearbook, and even signs with her paw print. She takes part in community events, dresses up for special occasions, and became, without anyone officially deciding it, the mascot that everyone in the Clark County School District recognizes as their own.
