Dolly Parton died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at her home in Nashville. She was 80 years old.

Seventeen months earlier, in March 2025, Carl Dean, her husband, had died at the age of 82. They had been married for 59 years. He never wanted to step onto a stage or walk a red carpet. She shone on every one that existed.

Days before she died, Dolly spoke with People magazine. She said she had neglected her own health while caring for Carl. She didn’t complain. She just told it, like someone explaining why they arrived late somewhere.

After Carl’s death, Dolly wrote him a song: “If You Hadn’t Been There”. She sang it alone, without him in the front row for the first time in six decades.

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, was the one who confirmed the news to the family. They had no children. They had each other.

Sometimes love doesn’t end when someone leaves. It ends when the other decides they can leave too.
