Dolly Parton recorded a song that no one has heard yet.
She made it in 2015, stored it in a chest made of chestnut wood that her own uncle built, and buried it inside a time capsule in Dollywood. Alongside it, she left a cassette player and a CD player, so that in the future someone could listen to it the way music was heard in her time.

The capsule won’t be opened until 2045.
Dolly knew it. And she found it hard to accept. “It drove me crazy”, she once said about the wait. She explained that her team had warned her that by then she would no longer be around, that she would be “very dead”. She responded with humor that maybe not, that by 2045 she would be 99 years old, and that she had seen people live longer than that.
She said, with the confidence of someone who knows what she had made, that the song was really good.
She did not make it to 99 to find out.

But there are artists who do not need to be present to keep appearing. Dolly sang throughout her life so people could hear her in the moment. This time she sang for an audience that does not yet exist, in a year she herself doubted she would reach.
Almost twenty years from now, someone will empty that chestnut box. They will put on the CD, or perhaps the cassette. And Dolly Parton’s voice will sound for the first time, new, in a world that by then will have been missing her for a very long time.

It will not be a return. It will be a promise that is finally fulfilled.
Dolly is gone. But she left behind a song waiting for the exact moment to introduce itself. 🎶
