For decades, Dolly Parton and Carl Dean maintained one of Hollywood’s most unusual relationships. They were married for nearly 60 years, but while she was a global star, he practically disappeared from the spotlight.
Dolly herself came to describe their relationship as an “open marriage”, an expression that may lead people to think that both had the freedom to have relationships with other people.
But that wasn’t what she meant.
In an interview, Parton explained that her marriage was “open” in the sense that they both had an independent mindset and deeply respected each other’s space.
And Dolly never hid that she liked to flirt.
“Men are my weakness”, she acknowledged in one of her interviews, before going on to say that she had had crushes on men who were very different from one another.
She even admitted that she could feel attracted to other men, but there was one fundamental difference: Carl knew that she was simply flirting and that she was not having sex with them.
“I always come home”, was the idea Dolly conveyed as she explained how that trust worked between them.
For the singer, that freedom was precisely one of the reasons her marriage had lasted for so long.
Dolly and Carl were complete opposites. She enjoyed stages, cameras, and public attention; he preferred to stay away from all of that. In an interview, Parton explained that this difference in personalities was part of what made their relationship work.
“We are complete opposites, but that’s what makes it fun”, she had said about her husband.
The couple met in Nashville in 1964 and married two years later. Carl remained almost entirely out of public life while Dolly built a career that ultimately made her one of the most famous artists in the world.
And although Dolly used the word “open”, her explanation made it clear that she was not talking about a sexually open relationship, but rather a relationship based on independence and trust.
Carl died in March 2025, after nearly six decades of marriage.
Now, following Dolly Parton’s death on August 25, 2026, that peculiar way of understanding her marriage is once again attracting attention.
Because behind the word “open” was something much simpler:
