Dolly Parton never had children of her own.
Together with Carl Dean, her husband of nearly sixty years, they tried in their own way during their life together. But in 1984, she was diagnosed with endometriosis. A year later, at 36, she underwent a partial hysterectomy.
It could have been a wound she carried in silence. Dolly chose something else.
“I didn’t have children because I believed God didn’t want me to have them, so that everyone else’s children could be mine”, she once said.
It was not an easy comforting phrase. It was a life decision.
She grew up as one of twelve siblings in a Tennessee cabin, and from childhood she helped care for the younger ones. That instinct never faded. Over time, she became an aunt, godmother, and maternal figure to nieces, nephews, and godchildren, including Miley Cyrus, who calls her her second mother.
But the greatest gesture did not bear a family name. Her father, Lee Parton, could not read or write. Dolly never forgot it.
In 1995, in her hometown, she launched the Imagination Library: one free book by mail every month for every child from birth through age five, regardless of how much their family earns.
Thirty years later, the program had surpassed 300 million books delivered in five countries. Three hundred million times, someone opened an envelope bearing her name and found a story waiting for them.
Dolly never had a child to carry her family name. She has entire generations who learned to read thanks to her. That is her way of being a mother. And she did not need to resemble anyone else to be extraordinary.
