Carla. That’s what the daughter Dolly Parton and Carl Dean never had would have been called.
She said so herself in 2014, with that mix of nostalgia and humor that characterized her: “When my husband and I got married, we thought about what our children would be like. If we’d had a girl, we would have named her Carla”. They dreamed about it, talking about it and laughing as they imagined whether she would be tall like Carl or short like her. But life, she said, had other plans.
Instead of lamenting it, Dolly turned that absence into abundance: she raised nieces and nephews as if they were her own, funded college educations for anyone who wanted to study, and founded Imagination Library, which now gives books to millions of children around the world. “God didn’t want me to have children so that all of everyone else’s children could be mine”, she used to say. Carl Dean died in March 2025 after nearly 60 years together. She followed him in August 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind a love story that never needed cameras or headlines to be real.
