On Sunday, July 19, Donald Trump arrived at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, ready to present the trophy for the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. Spain won 1-0 with a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, and everything was set for the crowning. But when the president stepped onto the field alongside Gianni Infantino, the entire stadium responded with a wave of boos that left no room for doubt.
It was not the first time fans had shown him their displeasure. Weeks earlier, Trump had personally called Infantino to demand that the red card given to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun be overturned, an interference that many considered a dirty move and that Belgium’s own national team made sure to remind him of with mockery after eliminating the United States.
Even so, FIFA gave Trump his own Peace Prize months earlier, after he was left out of the real Nobel. This time, however, it was the fans who delivered their own verdict, live and unfiltered, in front of cameras from around the world.
