Yashoda Gaikwad is about 60 years old and, according to Tribune India, was found on the morning of June 21, 2025, beside a pile of garbage in Aarey Colony, Mumbai. She was injured, her face covered in sores, and unable to move. When police asked her what had happened, she replied: “My grandson left me here”.

What followed was a race against time. According to Catholic Connect, one hospital did not have the facilities to admit her, and Cooper Hospital turned her away after a brief examination. Only the persistence of a police inspector got her admitted at 5:30 p.m., nearly eight hours later. There, a doctor confirmed a possible basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, on her cheek and nose.

The family initially said that she had left home on her own. According to police, security cameras told a different story, and the grandson, Sagar Shewale, 33, finally admitted under all the pressure that he had left her there.
